Boiling hot water springs, fast-flowing waterfalls and a beautiful, tranquil fjord.
North east of Bogarnes, near Reykholt the water here is incredibly hot and walkways with railings protect observers.
These impressive geothermal pools, where boiling water shoots out of the ground, are backed by colourful rocks.
East of Reykholt these two sets of waterfalls on the Hvita River are quite different but equally impressive.
Hraunfossar (Lava Falls) run from beneath the lava field over a one km stretch to tumble over low lava cliffs into the river.
Barnafoss is more dramatic, powering through a narrow lava gorge.
On our way back to Reykjavik at the end of our holiday we drove around Hvalfjordur, rather than go through the tunnel.
It's a beautiful fjord, 30km long with mountains north, south and east and one or two black beaches. At its eastern end is Iceland's highest waterfall at 198m, Glymur.
